To Chris:
dani
You revealed your secret to me,
Then told me to destroy the shame-filled confession
With flames as wild and burning as your passion.
Now all that reamins is a single sheet of ash.
All semblance of life
Burned away forever
Like the love
that was once
between
us.

Beautiful prose that leaves us begging for the rest of the story!

Yes, what is the story behind the story…? This was very compelling and heartfelt…

There’s not really a lot to tell. Senior year in high school, Chris asked me to the prom, neither of us having dates, but we didn’t really know each other at all. We spent a few weeks breaking the ice in giddy anticipation of what might be. Except his crush grew bigger, and mine, smaller. Finally, he wrote me a note saying that he was in love with me, and when he realized I didn’t reciprocate his feelings, he asked me to burn his note, ashamed of his outpouring of emotion.
In the visual form of the poem, I was also going for the parallel with the diminishing sentiment–love dwindling to nothing. Hope it worked.

This is a great little poem. I like the way you chose the line breaks near the end. It feels like the poem itself might be this illicit, shameful note. Great.
